Hundreds of Sears Holdings Corp. employees apparently had a more interesting morning than you did.
At 11:30 a.m. today, 566 employees gathered at the retailers’ Hoffman Estates headquarters to break the world record for the largest number of people assembled in one place while wearing Superman costumes. (The previous record was 437 people, FYI.)
The stunt, a celebration of Sears’ brand placement in the upcoming “Man of Steel” movie, required working with Warner Bros. Pictures and costume-maker Rubie’s Costume Co. to design and create 600 of the official uniforms worn by British actor Henry Cavill in the film. Employees were allowed to keep the costumes.
According to a Sears statement, “pivotal scenes” in the movie, to be released June 14, are shot inside a Sears store. Popular Sears products and brands also make cameos. Off-screen, members of Sears’ Shop Your Way rewards program will receive access to sneak peeks and promotional products.
The retailer is far from the only company to hitch itself to the new Superman film. According to Crain’s sister publication Ad Age, the movie grabbed more than $160 million from more than 100 promotional partners and will be the most heavily promoted Warner Bros. film of the year.
Other tie-ins come from Warby Parker, which will provide Clark-Kent-inspired glasses, Procter & Gamble’s Gillette, Walmart, Chrysler and Nokia.
New video spots and posters for Man of Steel, Warner Bros.’ reboot of the Superman film series, have surfaced online.
The 40-second promo, above, features Superman (played by Henry Cavill), his father Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lois Lane (Amy Adams) in various dramatic scenes from the movie, while Jor-El speaks — apparently giving advice to his son — in a voiceover.
Entitled “Soldier of Steel,” the following spot is actually an ad for the National Guard, and splices Man of Steel clips with footage of citizen soldiers with the reserve military force. The minute-long video says that there is a parallel between Superman and members of the National Guard.
What’s more, Man of Steel’s official Facebook page unveiled two new movies posters, below, which show Superman flying through the air.
Directed by Zack Synder, who also helmed Watchmen and 300, Man of Steel will debut on June 14.
