Seasoned veteran and all around incredible actor Gary Oldman has been cast as the leader of the human resistance in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Coming Soon reports.
Matt Reeves stepped in to direct the sequel to Fox’s critically and financially successful 2011 Planet of the Apes reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, when Rise director Rupert Wyatt bowed out. Casting news has slowly been trickling out since then. We know that James Franco, the star of the first film, had talked to Wyatt about reprising his role (possibly in a flash-back) when he was attached to direct but has not been approached since Reeves took over.
Jason Clarke and Kodi-Smit McPhee are set for roles in the film and Andy Serkis will be reprising his role as the leader of the Apes, Caesar. Deadline reports that Oldman will play, “Dreyfus, leader of the human resistance after the apes have taken power.”
The film is said to take place 15-years after the events of Rise with most of the human-race dead, and a small group of scientists leading a resistance in San Francisco. Their story will be set against Caesars attempts to create and maintain an Ape-lead civilization.
You will likely remember Oldman most recently as Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise. He’s had a long, storied and impressive career and is a powerful casting choice for this film. You can see him next as Dr. Robert Norton in the remake of Robocop.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set for release on May 23, 2014.
