The upcoming transition into a new generation of consoles is futzing with pre-order numbers for Call of Duty: Ghosts, according to CEO of Activision Publishing, Eric Hirshberg. During his company’s earnings call yesterday, Hirshberg noted that pre-orders for Ghosts are “well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year,” and that the impending arrival of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are to blame.
“Our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past COD pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition,” he said. Despite the lower pre-order numbers, Hirshberg noted that “other key engagement metrics,” such as the number of people playing per month and per day, the amount of DLC sales and community engagement, are all higher than previous years. He also added that pre-orders are more than double that of the original Call of Duty: Black Ops, which was last time Activision introduced a new Call of Duty sub-brand.
Activision isn’t the first publisher to cite next-gen consoles for lower pre-order numbers. EA Sports brand president Peter Moore recently made similar statements, reporting “softness” in pre-orders for current-gen sports titles as we get closer to the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One.
Someone slipped up and released a thirty second trailer for the new Call of Duty: Ghosts. We can’t show you the trailer, but we can tell you that at the end, the new logo for Xbox we showed earlier seems to be real.
Furthermore, there is no other console name listed. Since Call of Duty: Ghosts is going to be a cross-generation game, Activision may have opted to include a generic bumper rather than one with the system name.
We’ll know more in less than an hour.
Call of Duty fans are eagerly anticipating the annual release of the franchise, which seems to focus on a group of soldiers known as “Ghosts.” In recent weeks, the existence of the game as well as its presence at Microsoft’s May 21st Xbox reveal have been confirmed. Now, a Twitter user claims to have taken some shots of these images, but the characters depicted don’t have much context.
One thing we do know based on the images is that the game will feature so many masks. Follow the source links below to see a bunch of angry, dirty dudes with masks. If you want to see more substantial assets from the November 5 multiplatform release, you’ll want to check back on our site after the Microsoft event on the 21st. In advance of that, we decided to put our own thoughts together on what Infinity Ward and Activision can do to keep the series fresh.

A promotional poster has confirmed that the next title in the Call of Duty franchise is called Call of Duty: Ghosts and that it will be released on November 5, 2013. The poster comes just 24 hours after Activision began teasing the game on its official site and marks our first confirmation of the game’s title and release date.
So far, information on specific platforms hasn’t been released, but expect an official reveal to come on May 1st.
