Edge of Tomorrow sequel is officially a go !

Despite a less than stellar debut at the box office, the sequel to Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s Edge of Tomorrow has been given the green light, according to Deadline.

Edge of Tomorrow, which eventually made $100 million in the U.S. market through digital downloads and Blu-ray purchases, developed a rabid following with genre fans. The movie followed Cruise’s character, a military officer, who’s brought into an ongoing war against a group of aliens. Things get even more complicated when he learns that the alien army has the ability to rewind time and predict the future. When Cruise’s character is given the same powers, he teams up with a Special Forces agent (played by Blunt) to end the war.

Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the screenplay for the first film, will replace Doug Liman as the director on the sequel. McQuarrie is currently working on the sixth Mission Impossible movie. If Cruise returns for the sequel, it will mark the fourth time McQuarrie and Cruise have worked together, following Jack Reacher, Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation and the newest Mission Impossible.

Both Blunt and Cruise are rumored to return, but neither have confirmed or denied reports.
