“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” Webs $35.5 million at the Box Office !

After two strong weeks overseas, Sony and Marvel’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opened in North America on Friday with $35.5 million at the box office, according to Variety. The trade estimates it will make somewhere north of $90 million during its domestic opening weekend.

The film has already brought in more than $155 million overseas. Following its Friday opening in North America, it opens in China on Sunday.

While it’s difficult to compare the film’s opening weekend to that of its predecessor, which opened on the Tuesday before Independence Day two years ago, a $90 million opening weekend would fall short of the $114.8 million that Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” made in 2002 during its opening weekend and the $155 million made by “Spider-Man 3” in 2007. Both of those films opened on the first weekend in May as well. The second film in Raimi’s trilogy brought in $88 million during its opening weekend in June 2004.

Critically the film is falling short of the first “Amazing Spider-Man.” It’s currently in the “yellow” on Metacritic with a score of 53, which translates to “mixed or average reviews” from critics. Fans on that same site have it ranked at 7.6, or “generally favorable reviews.”

Comic Book Resources’ Josh Wigler, in his review of the film, said, “Returning director Marc Webb’s vision of the web-slinging superhero is spot-on. And yet, there are a few fatal flaws that keep the sequel from fully living up to the descriptor in its title.”
